Do I need a referral from my family physician ?

No. However patients can be referred by their physician, a referral is not necessary. You can simply contact a podiatrist’s office directly and make an appointment that works best for you!

Who is more likely to need to see a podiatrist ?

Women have about four times as many foot problems as men. Wearing high heels for a good chunk of your life is often the culprit.

Can more serious medical problems start in the feet ?

Your feet mirror your overall health. Conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, nerve and circulatory disorders can show their initial symptoms in the feet. So your feet can be the sign of more serious medical ailments.

How much pressure goes on my foot while walking ?

There are times when you are walking that the pressure on your feet is more than your body weight. For example, when you’re running, it can be three or four times your body weight.

Are you born with feet problems or do they develop later ?

According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, only a small percentage of the population is born with foot problems. However, a lack of awareness or proper care — including poor-fitting shoes — could bring on foot problems.
